Environment

Environmental component of the study area of the New Yurimaguas Port Terminal

The project is located on the left bank of the Huallaga River, in the area called Nueva Reforma. In terms of jurisdiction, it is located in the district of Yurimaguas, province of Alto Amazon, in the department of Loreto. The project does not affect protected natural areas or land belonging to rural or native communities. Hence, the project will not cause involuntary resettlement migration, as it is an area of intensive human intervention.

The area located in the northern jungle of Peru (low jungle) belongs to the type of warm, wet tropical rainforest climate and is surrounded by hillocks.

The area is dominated by flora species of wide distribution and typical to areas intervened by human activities. Some of these include species like Himatanthus sucuuba "rogue caspi" (Apocynaceae) and Vernonanthura sp.1 "rod or ocuera yana" (Asteraceae), among others. Widely common species found in secondary succession forests and classified as fallow successional state are also recorded.

As to local birdlife, the predominant trophic group corresponds primarily to insectivores belonging to the families Tyrannidae and Thamnophilidae. In relation to mammals, evidence of sightings and fingerprints of Saguinus fuscicollis "saddle back tamarin monkey" and Dasypus novemcinctus "armadillo" were recorded. In terms of herpetofauna, Leptodactylus andreae (Family Leptodactylidae), marine Rhinella (Family Bufonidae), Hypsiboas lanciformis (Family Hylidae), and lizards, Ameiva ameiva and Kentropyx pelviceps (Family Teiidae) and Bothrop satrox (Family Viperidae) species were identified.

No surface evidence of any presence of archaeological remains has been found. The areas of project intervention have thus obtained the Certificate of Absence of Archaeological Remains (CIRAS) issued by the Ministry of Culture.
